Yesterday Cinnamon had X-rays on her hips and legs, and it turned out that Cinnamon has arthritis that comes from Hip Dysplasia.
She is going to be on medication (Rimadyl) for over a week and also having weekly injections (Pentosan) for the next four weeks starting yesterday. We still don't know what level of exercise will be allowed after the series of treatments. She cannot do agility at least for a while, but I am optimistic as there are many other things we can enjoy together even if we can't do agility.
Cookie has been doing well after the episode on Sunday. His walking is still wobbly but he doesn't seem to have any significant pain. As some of you have said, it might've been a seizure. At least I don't think he ate something he shouldn't have, as he was always on the lead when he was outside, so I must have noticed if he had eaten something.
Many thanks to those who sent us warm messages!! I am lucky to have great friends and supporters like you all! I am sorry we haven't been able to visit your blogs for the last several days. I promise we will catch up!
That Rim-a-dill stuff is pretty good. It should make you feel better, but no jumping for a while, OK?
ReplyDeleteSlobbers,
Mango
Poor cookie. I hope that the meds help! I hope that you dont mind me asking. But how old are you?
ReplyDeleteWow! Hip Displasia never even crossed my mind. I'm so used to it being a problem in larger breeds, but from what I've read (just now did a little research) I guess it's starting to become a big problem in the breed. Sorry it's bad news, but at least it's manageable. We'll keep both Cookie and Cinnamon in our thoughts.
ReplyDeleteHope the medication helps Cinnamon. Keep us posted!
ReplyDeleteIt's great to see you have everything under controll! And don't worry about the blogs, they can wait!
ReplyDeleteGet well soon!

Dear Cinnamon,
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to hear you have arn'trightis. I have heard that is very unpleasant. I hope the medisin
helps you. I am sure there will be plenty of fun things that you can still do.
Dear Cookie,
I am sorry you still have not recovered completely from your mystery illness. I hope you get all better and never get that illness again.
smooches to you all,
Mr Darcy
O I also wanted to say that I decided to take your advise, and not eat my toys.
ReplyDeleteMr Darcy
I'm sorry Cinnamon has arthritis. There are some good things to help with the pain, and things like hydrotherapy to keep muscles strong. My mom wonders about maybe it was a seizure for Cookie--she has had 2 dogs with 'Johnsonian seizures'--fortunately, pretty mild. Nothing caused it, just happened. I believe they will be okay.

I'm really sorry to hear all this! If you go to my blogroll, Brownie Barks is about a dog who happens to have hip dysplasia as well. Maybe they can share some info with you.
ReplyDeleteIf you have a place for the dogs to swim or wade in water, I hear that's great for the body!
Hi Cookie & Cinnamon,
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear the bad news about Cinnamon's hips but I hope things will get much better after rest and medication. I agree with River - I think after you have had your 4 weeks of treatment, hydrotherapy would be a very good option - it is even recommended for humans rehabilitating from injuries - so definitely discuss that with your vet!
I have been on Rimadyll too a couple of times - when I have played too boisterously and pulled a muscle. It is very good and is in a yummy chicken flavour! Hee! hee!
I heard from my human that you may be starting doggie dancing, Cinnamon, as something to keep you busy while you are recovering. I am so excited! I think is a good idea as you are a 'busy girl' and it will be good to have some dog activity to stimulate your mind - but at least with Freestyle, you can choose which tricks & moves you want to do so you can avoid any which are bad for your hip. Looking forward to seeing you at class!
Hope Cookie doesn't have another scary attack like that again!
Slobbers,
Honey the Great Dane
No agility for now. its not that bad. with u there with them both... quality time is best (:
ReplyDeleteget well soon. hugs to both of u.
Dear Cinnamon,
ReplyDeleteI sure hope the Rimadyl starts to make you feel better fast. Its no fun having the sickies. Mom says her 1st dane had arthritis in her back. While Rimadyl didnt help much, accupuncture worked wonders! Maybe that would help your hip displease-asia too?
hope you feel better soon

Hope you are feeling better soon... My senior beagle has severe arthritis - to the point that when she came into the rescue she could not walk or stand up on her own. We had great success with accupuncture, and also found that we had better results with Previcox than with Rimadyl (but it's more expensive). Hopefully a little rest will really help. As for Cookie, if it was a seizure - you probably wouldn't still be seeing the affects. They are usually pretty much gone as quickly as they start. If you find it is seizures, I have a really good book that might help. Also, if (hopefully not) he has another episode - start keeping a log with the time, what he was doing, had you cleaned, etc. My friend found that a day after she washed the blankets - her dog would have a seizure. She had switched fabric softners... Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteWe really hope best for you two. Mom sends lot of strenght to your people. It is so hard to wacth you loved once suffer and don't know how to help. Keeping our paws crossed for you!
ReplyDelete-Lenni & Ressu-

Hi guys,
ReplyDeleteSorry we haven't visited for such a long time. Now that we do we are sad to see that both Cookie and Cinnamon have not been doing so well. It must have been a very anxious time. I know how it can be - the slightest thing wrong with Jazz and Dixie and I worry and usually take them to the vet which is about 200m from our house. Hope that Cookie doesn't have another episode and that Cinnamon's hind leg gets better. We are thinking of our beagle buddies across the seas.

There is so much that medicine can do now that wasn't even possible a few years ago. If you haven't already done so, a glucosamine/chondroitin supplemtent would be beneficial. Beagles have such a great attitude. I am sure there will be improvement.
ReplyDeleteOh - for arthritis, make sure you don't have any grains in your food as that can make it worse... and fish oil has also really helped Jacquelyn. I also agree with Honey The Great Dane - freestyle is a great activity as it will help keep you both physically and mentally active, but you can choose things that are easy for you... Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteOh dear.... we feel bad that we've missed this....you two have really been through the mill :o(
ReplyDeletePoor Cinnamon....paws crossed that the meds work and Cookie...no more of your episodes, ok?
We missed you but we should be back on track now (you've heard that before, right?)
Take care,
Slobbers xx
